Deuces Wild Video Poker: How Wild Twos Reshape the Hands
· 4 min
Deuces wild is a video poker game played with a standard 52-card deck in which all four twos are wild. A deuce can stand in for any card to complete the best possible hand. Because wild cards make strong hands far more common, the game raises the bar for a paying hand: the lowest one is three of a kind, not a pair. Everything else about the format, from dealing five cards to holding and drawing, works as in other draw-poker machines.
One hand in four steps
- Choose the coin value and the number of coins per hand.
- Press deal. Five cards appear.
- Tap the cards you want to hold. Every card not held is replaced.
- Press draw. The final hand is compared with the paytable and any win is credited.
There is one decision per hand, and it is entirely the player's. The cards themselves are dealt by a random number generator, as in a slot, but the hold choice changes the outcome. That combination of chance and choice is why video poker has followers who would never touch a reel game.
The hands and a sample paytable
Deuces wild adds hands that do not exist in ordinary poker, such as five of a kind and a "wild royal" made with one or more deuces. The schedule below is one widely known version, shown per coin bet. Machines vary, and the paytable on the screen in front of you is the only one that applies.
| Hand | Pays per coin | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Natural royal flush | 250 (often raised to 800 per coin with maximum coins) | Ace to ten of one suit with no deuces |
| Four deuces | 200 | All four twos in one hand |
| Wild royal flush | 25 | Royal flush completed with a deuce |
| Five of a kind | 15 | Possible only thanks to wild cards |
| Straight flush | 9 | |
| Four of a kind | 5 | |
| Full house | 3 | |
| Flush | 2 | |
| Straight | 2 | |
| Three of a kind | 1 | The lowest paying hand |
Other versions trim a line or two, for instance paying less for four of a kind or a full house. Those small cuts look harmless and are not. Hands like four of a kind turn up often in deuces wild, so a one-unit reduction there changes the long-run return more than a change at the top of the table.
Why the paytable matters more than the theme
With slots, the return-to-player figure is hidden in the help screen and cannot be checked by eye. Video poker is different: the paytable is the game's maths in plain view. Two machines that look identical, side by side, can keep very different shares of what is played through them. Comparing paytables before choosing a machine is the most practical skill a deuces wild player can have, and it is purely a matter of reading, not luck.
The maximum-coin bonus on the natural royal is the other detail to notice. Playing fewer than the maximum coins usually forfeits that boost. That is not a reason to bet more than a budget allows; it simply means the full advertised return is only available at maximum coins, and a smaller coin value at full coins may fit a budget better than a large coin value at one coin.
The basic logic of holding
Strategy charts for deuces wild run to dozens of lines, but a few principles sit at the top of all of them:
- Never discard a deuce. Every two is valuable, so hold all of them.
- Count your deuces first. The right hold depends heavily on whether the hand has zero, one, two, three or four of them.
- Do not hold a lone pair as if it pays. A pair is worth nothing here, but a pair can still be the best start towards three or four of a kind when nothing better is available.
- Value draws differently from ordinary poker. Straights and flushes pay little in deuces wild, so drawing to them is less attractive than in a jacks-or-better game.
Even play that follows a chart perfectly leaves outcomes to the cards in any single session. Short runs can go badly for anyone, and most paytables still keep a margin for the house.
Is deuces wild the same as a slot with wild symbols?
The idea of a substitute is shared, which our entry on wild symbols in slots explores, along with the reel wilds that hold their place described under sticky wilds. Slots, though, offer no decisions. In video poker the hold choice is yours.
Where does deuces wild appear?
On casino floors as a stand-alone machine or as part of a multi-game cabinet, and online where casino games are legal. Online versions tend to deal faster.
Keeping it measured
Video poker hands go by quickly, and a fast game turns a modest stake into a large total wagered within an hour. Short, planned sittings of the kind set out in our guide to fitting slots into a busy week suit video poker just as well. If you collect loyalty points, the entry on how casino comps work explains how that total is tracked. For a table game with a single decision per hand, see Caribbean stud poker. Video poker is a product for adults, and it is not legal everywhere; check before you play, and stop once the amount you planned has been spent.
