What Are Sticky Wilds?

· 3 min

A wild symbol substitutes for other symbols to help complete a winning combination. On most spins it appears, does its job and disappears with the next spin. A sticky wild behaves differently: once it lands, it stays fixed in the same position for a number of further spins, sometimes for an entire bonus round. The reels keep turning around it while it waits for other symbols to line up beside it.

This page is written for adults aged 18 and over. It explains a common slot feature; it does not suggest that any way of playing improves the odds.

The common versions

Developers use the word "sticky" loosely, so it helps to know the main variations. The game's help screen always describes the exact rule.

TypeHow long it staysTypical setting
Round-long sticky wildUntil the free spins endFree-spin features
Counted sticky wildA fixed number of spins, often shown by a small counterBase game or features
Respin sticky wildHeld while the game awards a free respinBase game

Some games combine these: a wild might expand to cover a whole reel and then stay there, or collect a growing multiplier each time it forms part of a win.

Why they feel so promising

A wild that stays in place makes every following spin look full of possibility. With two or three of them locked on the screen during free spins, the chance of each spin paying something does rise within that round, and players can see the potential building. That visible build-up is a big part of why sticky features are popular.

It is worth separating the feeling from the arithmetic, though. The frequency and behaviour of sticky wilds are written into the game's design, and their full value is already included in the return-to-player figure stated by the developer. They are one of the ways the game spends its built-in return, not an extra gift on top of it. Our explainer on random number generators describes how each spin's result is settled by software rather than by anything visible on the reels.

Sticky wilds and the urge to keep spinning

There is one trap specific to features that carry over between spins. When a sticky wild has a few spins left on its counter, stopping can feel like walking away from something already paid for. In a free-spin round the remaining spins cost nothing, so finishing them is natural. In the base game, though, every remaining spin still costs a full stake, and the wild's presence does not change the long-run edge of those spins.

Games also differ in what happens if you close them mid-feature. Some save the state and restore the wilds when you return; others do not, or only within a time limit. If that matters to you, the help screen usually explains it.

How sticky wilds relate to other features

  • Hold and win rounds lock prize symbols rather than wilds, but follow the same idea of building a screen over several spins. See how hold and win slots work.
  • Expanding wilds grow to fill a reel; when they also stick, the effect is stronger but rarer.
  • Cascading or tumbling reels remove winning symbols; sticky wilds sometimes survive the tumble when the game says so.

A short checklist

  1. Open the paytable and find out exactly how long a sticky wild stays.
  2. Check whether it carries a multiplier and whether that multiplier grows.
  3. Note whether the feature survives closing the game.
  4. Keep to the session budget, even when wilds are still on the screen.

Sticky wilds make a slot feel more eventful, and that is their purpose. They do not remove the house edge or make any result predictable. Online slots are regulated differently around the world, so check the rules where you live, and treat every spin as paid entertainment rather than a route to income.
