What Is a Bet Slip? How to Read One Before You Confirm

· 4 min

A bet slip is the summary of a wager before and after it is placed. On a betting app it is the panel that collects your selections; in a betting shop it was once a paper form. Either way it records what you are backing, at what price, for how much, and what you could get back. Reading it properly is the cheapest safety check in sports betting, because almost every dispute over a settled bet begins with a line on the slip that was skimmed rather than read.

What each part of the slip records

Layouts differ between operators, but the same information appears in some form on all of them.

FieldWhat it tells youWhat to look for
EventThe match or race and its start timeThe right teams, the right date, the right competition
MarketThe question being bet on, such as match result, spread or totalFull time or first half; including or excluding overtime
SelectionYour answer to that questionThe side, the number and the plus or minus sign
OddsThe price, in decimal, fractional or American formatThat the price matches the one you saw a moment ago
Bet typeSingle, parlay, system bet and so onThat several picks have not been joined into one ticket by accident
StakeThe amount at riskPer line or in total, especially on system bets
Potential returnWhat a winning ticket pays, usually including the stakeReturn versus profit; the two are easy to confuse
Reference numberThe ticket's ID once placedKeep it if you ever need to query a settlement

Checks worth making before you tap confirm

  1. Read the market name out loud. "Total goals, first half, over 1.5" is a very different bet from the full-match version.
  2. Look at the sign. A favourite at −1.5 and an underdog at +1.5 sit next to each other on the screen and are easy to swap.
  3. Count the selections. Apps often add every tapped pick to the slip. If you meant to place two separate bets, make sure they have not merged into a combination ticket. Our entry on same-game parlays shows how quickly the legs stack up.
  4. Check the odds-change setting. Many slips have an option to accept any price change automatically. With it switched on, the price you confirm may not be the one you saw.
  5. Compare stake with plan. The figure in the stake box should fit within the amount set aside for the day, not stretch it.

After the bet: reading the settled slip

Once a match ends, the slip shows a status. The common ones:

  • Open or pending: the event has not finished or has not yet been settled.
  • Won and lost: self-explanatory, although it is worth checking the return against the price.
  • Void or refunded: the bet was cancelled, often because a match was postponed or a selection did not take part.
  • Push: the result landed exactly on the line, so the stake came back. Our entry on what a push is covers how a tied leg changes a combination ticket.
  • Cashed out: the ticket was closed early for the amount offered at the time.

Common misreadings

"Return" is not profit

A slip showing a return of 50 on a stake of 20 means a profit of 30. Operators usually display the return because it includes the stake, which makes the figure look larger.

American odds read backwards to newcomers

A price of −150 means a stake of 150 is needed to win 100; +150 means a stake of 100 wins 150. Many apps let you switch to decimal odds, which some people find easier because the return is simply stake times price.

System bets multiply the stake

A system or multiple bet with several combinations may charge the entered stake for each line. A stake of 2 on a ticket with eleven lines costs 22, not 2.

Start times follow the account setting

Event times on a slip are shown in the time zone chosen in the account or detected from the device. A match listed for 01:00 may be tonight or tomorrow night depending on that setting, and live markets close the moment the event begins. If a fixture is played abroad, a quick check of the date avoids backing a game that has already started or one that is a day further away than expected.

Where a single selection fits

The simplest slip carries one selection and one price. Our entry on straight bets explains why that format is the easiest to read and settle. Whichever format you choose, betting is meant for adults only and is not permitted everywhere, so check what applies where you live, and let the slip record an amount you would be content to lose.

A quick routine for the first minute with an unfamiliar game.

  • I have opened the help screen and found the stated return to player
  • I know how the bonus round starts and how long its features last
  • I have worked out what a bonus buy would cost in real money, if the game offers one
  • My spending cap and finishing time are fixed
  • I have confirmed that online slots are legal where I live
